Dear Devotees,

I was very surprised when I read Eka Buddhi Prabhu’s original letter about "Did Lord Nityananda Enter Srila Prabhupada’s Body?" and the responses it generated.

Eka Buddhi Prabhu said that in a lecture on Nityananda Prabhu’s appearance day a person giving the lecture said, "Nityananda Prabhu had entered Srila Prabhupada’s body" and empowered him to preach. The person giving the lecture made the point, "If it was not for Lord Nityananda entering his body, and thus empowering him, how could you explain Srila Prabhupada’s success when so many other disciples of Bhaktisiddhanta had failed?"

The person giving this lecture said he had heard it from a Swami who had heard it from Sridhar Maharaj.

There are a couple of things that I feel need to be said here.

It was Sripad Bhakti Vicar Yajabar Maharaj, another Godbrother of Srila Prabhupada, who first suggested that Srila Prabhupada was a Shaktyavesha Avatar specially empowered by the Lord to preach all over the world. Srila Sridhar Maharaj agreed with what Sripad Yajabar Maharaj. But Srila Sridhar Maharaj was not the first person to say that Srila Prabhupada was Shaktyavesha Avatar.

Another point is that at the opening ceremony of of ISKCON’s Mayapura Chandrodaya Mandir, Srila Sridhar Maharaj gave a talk in which he said that the worldwide preaching of Srila Prabhupada was "a miracle." At that time (and at many other times), Srila Sridhar Maharaj said that Srila Prabhupada was specially empowered by the Lord to make this miracle come true.

Before now, nobody has ever spread any rumours that Srila Sridhar Maharaj said Lord Nityananda entered Srila Prabhupada’s body to empower him. This point was also made by Raghavendu das adhikari who wrote: "I have been told that Sridhar Maharaja said that the Grace of Lord Nityananda entered into Srila Prabhupada (without use of the word ‘body’)."

The idea is that "Nityananda Prabhu entering Srila Prabhupada’s body" is a distortion of the original statements of Sripad Yajabar Maharaj and Srila Sridhar Maharaj.

It is an unfortunate fact that in this world that when a storyteller hears another storyteller’s tale, the second storyteller will often embellish and alter the original story. In the course of time a story will mutate and spread far and wide, creating a false mythology.

The things that Srila Sridhar Maharaj really did say about Srila Prabhupada being a Shaktyavesha Avatar are probably best summed up in this pranam mantra to Srila Prabhupada:

namah om visnupadaya krsna presthaya bhutale
swami sri bhaktivedanta prabhupadaya te namah
gurvajnam sirasi drtva-saktyavesa sva-rupine
hare-krsneti mantrena pascatya-pracya-tarine
visvacarya prabaryaya divya karunya murtaye
sri-bhagavata-madhurya-gita-jnana pradayine
gaura-sri-rupa-siddhanta-saraswati nisevine
radha-krsna padambhoja-bhrngaya gurave namah

I offer my humble obeisances unto His Divine Grace Srila A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who is Krsna’s beloved associate and who came down to this plane from Goloka. Taking the order of his Guru on his head, he is the saktyavesa (empowered) avatar of Nityananda Prabhu personified. He distributed the Hare Krsna mantra all over the Eastern and Western world, delivering and uplifting all fallen souls. He is the best of millions of jagat-gurus, because he is the personification of divine mercy. He has distributed the sweet nectar of Srimad-Bhagavatam and the transcendental knowledge of Bhagavad-gita all over the world. He is constantly engaged in exclusive devotional service to Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakura, Srila Rupa Goswami, and Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu. I offer my humble obeisances unto Srila Prabhupada, who is like a bumblebee always tasting the nectar of the lotus feet of Sri Sri Radha and Govinda.

This pranam mantra was written about about twenty years ago. It was written by Srila Sridhar Maharaj’s chosen successor, Srila Govinda Maharaj.

Yours respectfully,
Muralidhar das
(a disciple of Srila Bhakti Rakshak Sridhar Maharaj)
