Choosing a Guru

Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

After being so many years in Krsna consciousness, I have been able to see this problem more clearly, and I’m surer that this thing doesn’t work without Krsna’s mercy. Doesn’t matter how we try, we will have to understand that some gurus in ISCKON are not available for us personally, so why hanker and lament?

When we are ready in our daydreaming like: "I absolutely want Him" or "He’s so fantastic. He smiles so beautifully," then we can turn to Krsna and He will give us spiritual eyes to see who’s really there for us. This thing about choosing a guru is really the biggest step in our lives, and we might not find our guru yet, but if we give this thing time and intelligence, it will come.

The guru has to repeat exactly what his guru has been saying, and there are different tests to find this out. However, I find it disturbing if I can not get a personal touch to the guru, and sometimes I cannot find any "person" in some gurus, but maybe that is the way of Krsna to show me that this guru is not for me. The "person" is hidden from my eyes.

Sometimes I find it disturbing when someone who already has a guru doesn’t want to share some knowledge about his or her spiritual master. How will I get to know them then? Anyway, Srila Prabhupada said in his book The Spiritual Master and The Disciple that if the guru is hard to reach one should find another. We are very lucky that there are so many gurus to choose from in ISKCON, and if we are really sincere we will get a really sincere guru-maharaja. Try to find fault more in yourself than in any Vaisnava or guru.

Your faultfull servant in hope of finding her guru,
Bhaktin Alice
