ISKCON Philadelphia Hosts Hospice Seminar

On August 10, 2002, Sangita devi dasi, RN, Certified Hospice Educator, led a seminar/workshop entitled, "Hospice Care for the Departing Vaisnava" at the ISKCON Philadelphia temple. Eighteen devotees participated from Pennsylvania, California, and Idaho as well as England. Guest speakers included, Sachi Pattinson, MA, Crisis Therapist, and Shradhdha Patel, RN, BSN Supervisor at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Topics included the following:

—The history of the hospice movement

—Expanding the modern hospice movement through Vaisnavas C.A.R.E.

—The meaning of hospice and palliative care

—Practical matters to consider when a devotee is terminally ill

—Living Wills/Advanced Directives

—Experiencing a terminal illness

—Dr. Kubler-Ross and the Stages of Dying

—What is Spiritual Pain?

—Communicating with one who is dying

—Pain and Symptom Management

—Complementary Therapies for Comfort Care

—Care of the Caregiver: Avoiding Burnout

—Signs and Symptoms of Dying

—Caring for Terminally ill Children and Adolescents

—Bereavement Counseling for Children and Adults

Hands-on workshop activities included participants dividing into small groups to discuss how they would feel when confronted with a terminal illness, as well as a demonstration of guided imagery for relaxation.

Upcoming Five-Day Hospice Seminar in Mayapur

Jusaniya dasi, RN, BSN, Sachi dasi, MA, and Sangita devi dasi, RN will present a five-day hospice seminar as part of the Mayapur Institute of Higher Education (MIHE) from March 2-6, 2003. This seminar will consist of 1 and ½ hour sessions each day and will include many of the topics discussed above, plus other subject matter. Seeking Articles on Complementary Therapy

Are you trained and qualified to teach others about the use of complementary therapies for comfort care? We are asking for articles for our Vaisnavas C.A.R.E. website so caregivers can better assist a terminally ill devotee in their community.  Suggested topics include massage therapy, aromatherapy, guided imagery, herbal therapy, and music therapy. Other complementary therapies are also welcome. Please submit articles to Jusaniya dasi at Jusaniya@msn.com  Please include your training and resources.
