the Best Deal Out of a Bad Bargain
Name Withheld Upon Request
Please accept my humble obeisances, all glories to Srila Prabhupada.
Thank you for printing the article on ISKCON's intolerance of homosexuals. I have been an initiated devotee since 1993 and I carefully follow the regulative principles as given by Srila Prabhupada. I am also a lesbian.
Our society has plenty of mixed up ideas about heterosexuality, what to speak of persons of the 3rd gender. Devotees have come up with the wildest of ideas and criticisms of who and what I am. The famous misconception is that I must have been abused by a male in some past trauma. Before joining ISKCON I never met an abusive male, all my male freinds and family members were gentlemen- unlike the temple devotees/authorities I would experience. Not a single man, not even my father, ever raised his hand to stike me. As a temple devotee, that's another story.
I have been lesbian for over 22 years and yet it’s very important to others to get me married. I am not a "feminazi"- I wear a long braid and keep my head covered at all times. Anytime I visit a temple festival or function the first question out of anybody's mouth is "so how old are you these days?" In other words, “so why aren’t you married?” In my 37 years on this planet in this body I have never had any desire to procreate with a man. Oh well. Is that the best material life has to offer? Boring.
It is hard for straight devotees to imagine my celibacy as genuine. Both Srila Prabhupada and I know for certain that I follow the principles. That has not been an easy task. Maya is always there. Those who cannot follow the principles can’t understand how anyone else can. Otherwise, what is the difficulty understanding?
Making the best deal out of a bad bargain
Being lesbian has been the most auspicious material entanglement for my devotional service. By not having family life I can engage full time in service – and yes, I have a nice service. I can stay up all night helping some confused bhaktin who wants to bloop. I can drop anything and go do some service my authorities would like done. I am not agitated by being the only female in the morning program. When my lady friends have some emergency, they know I will be there to baby-sit. (By the way, I am not a paedophile. 95% of all paedophiles are straight males.)
When sex desire enters the mind, as it does for every devotee, I just read more of Prabhupada's books, chant more japa, and do some extra service. I meditate upon the beautiful eyebrows of Sri Balarama.
Thank you for speaking on our behalf.
