We Are Antiquated
By Sankarsan Das Adhikari

I was shocked to read the following statement in a recent article by Niscala devi dasi entitled "Can the Guru Make Mistakes?":

She writes, "A good example is his (Srila Prabhupada's) attitude towards women, which seems a bit antiquated."

How can anyone, especially a member of ISKCON, make such a judgment about the pure devotee of the Lord? This is the height of madness. If we think that the pure devotee is antiquated, then we are antiquated.

The fact is that Srila Prabhupada is the world's greatest spiritual authority. If we cannot accept something he teaches that does not mean it is wrong. It means that our understanding is imperfect. Srila Prabhupada is not antiquated. He's the greatest spiritual revolutionary; he's way ahead of his time. He was sent to his material world by Krishna to respiritualize the entire universe. Even though we may not realize it now, someday we and the entire world will realize how everything he taught us was perfect.

So in the meantime, while we are waiting for our own imperfect understanding to catch up with Srila Prabhupada's perfect teachings, what are we to do? We must faithfully hold onto them with unflinching conviction.

Svetasvatara Upanisad (6.23):
yasya deve para bhaktir
yatha deve tatha gurau
tasyaite kathita hy arthah
prakasante mahatmanah

"Only unto those great souls who have implicit faith in both the Lord and the spiritual master are all the imports of Vedic knowledge automatically revealed.
