Problems with ISKCON: A Comment by a Gurukuli
By Maharani dasi

This letter is in response to Iksvaku Prabhu's article "Problems with ISKCON."

I believe that Iksvaku Prabhu may be referring to (among other things) the gurukuli lawsuit. If so, I can only say that I disagree. I am a gurukuli that was never hurt, neglected, or molested in the care of ISKCON. I am not involved in the Turley suit in any way. I don't agree with the charge against Srila Prabhupada in the suit. However, I do support the gurukulis right to sue.

They have a right to sue because some very vile individuals committed some very horrible crimes against them, and they were not defended by ISKCON. This kind of protection of criminals should not be tolerated by anyone, yet ISKCON did shelter the criminals. Unfortunately, we cannot in Kali yuga expect Lord Nrsimha to appear and defend the children, so one has to be more proactive.

No one will suggest that pedophiles and child abusers ought to go unpunished, yet I have read that gurukulis should just say, "oh well, just my karma." Sometimes bloody, fratricidal wars have to be fought so that evil can be punished, and sometimes good people on both sides are killed, even great devotees. Krsna never said to Arjuna "Well, you're right, you might kill Bhisma or Drona, so you might as well put down your weapons. After all, it's only your bad karma that your kingdom was stolen from you anyway. Just go back to the forest and let Duryodhana do whatever evil things he's inclined to do."
