The Amish: A Comment on Kenneth Rowe's Article
by Karuna devi dasi

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada.

I think we need to be careful and not speculate when we make public statements about other religious groups or organizations.

In Kenneth Rowe's recent letter to Chakra, he wites, "Besides, I don't see droves of people these days subscribing to Amish philosophy for its spiritual superiority or relevance. In fact, Amish Society is dwindling as they are reduced to a mere tourist attraction"

From the recent issue of Amish Heartland magazine: "Contrary to popular belief, the Amish population is not shrinking, but growing at a steady rate. Approximately 80 percent of Amish youth choose to remain Amish, and most have large families, causing the population to double about every 25 years."

An Amish friend of mine has told me that the Amish are forming new communities just to get enough land to live on and that yes, outsiders are joining, as many are seeking to live a simple peaceful godly lifestyle.

Your servant,
Karuna dd
