Blacks and Slavery
by Haravapu dasa

Dear Umapati Swami,

Please accept my humble obeisances and all glories to His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada.

I read your response to Krsna Avatara prabhu on "Blacks and Slavery" and it was nice to hear the truth about Prabhupada and his knowledgeable and compassionate view on this subject. It is also very nice that you apologized to Krsna Avatara prabhu for his mistreatment, although you yourself were not responsible. However, I feel it would be more productive in helping a devotee who has been hurt or misled to use great sensitivity when dealing with that devotee and present Prabhupada's transcendental position on these matters, rather than accusing that devotee of wrong statements or doing damage to the movement. I am sure Krsna Avatara did not mean to criticize Srila Prabhupada or ISKCON in the way that you imply. These devotees have been hurt and so they lash out, but actually it is a cry for help and understanding. We need to give that understanding in a compassionate and loving way. By doing this the victimized devotee will feel relieved and will continue in his service to Krsna with renewed vigor and will be happy to be a part of ISKCON.

I hope this letter will help us to understand how to communicate and deal with each other's problems so that we can be a solid unit in the service of Krsna. We will have to learn how to be loving and caring to each other. As it stands right now we treat each other as if we are enemies rather than brothers. Before we can move forward we must do away with this smashing attitude. It is not a problem-solving method.

Yours truly, Haravapu dasa
