“I politely told her that maybe she was mistaking [Srila Prabhupada] for another person because Srila Prabhupada had already passed away twenty-three years ago.”

“So how wonderful it is that 25 years later a woman who was then 6 years old still remembered the name of a Hare Krsna who was nice to her.”

Sankirtan stories from America
By Candrasekhar Acarya dasa

CHAKRA (Los Angeles, CA) - October 17, 1999:

I approached a middle-aged lady at the LA airport. When I showed her the books of Srila Prabhupada and explained to her what they were about, she said, “This is exactly what I need. I am just now going to my mother’s funeral; she passed away last Saturday.”

I met a young man. He shook my hand and said, “Man, you guys are great. You really turned me around: I used to follow the concert tour of the “Grateful Dead” and you guys fed and and really cared for me. Thank you so much. Keep it up!”

Last year I met a lady with her two young daughters in a parking lot of San Francisco. I showed her the Bhagavad-gita and when she saw the picture of Srila Prabhupada she said “Oh, I saw this man once!” I politely told her that maybe she was mistaking him for another person because Srila Prabhupada had already passed away twenty-three years ago. She insisted, “No, I met him. I was 6 years old. My parents were hippies in the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco. It was so wild at that time in 1967 that often my parents would forget to feed us. So my sister and me would often go to the Hare Krsna temple and we would eat your wonderful vegetarian food. I specially remember one young lady, she was sooooo nice to us; her name was Melanie. So one day your spiritual master arrived from New York. I remember the temple room was full with incense and people. He came in and sat down and chanted for a while and then spoke for a little bit. I remember it very vividly. Just by speaking to you all these memories are coming back to me.” Then this nice lady showed the picture of Srila Prabhupada to her little daughter and told her “you see, this was Swamiji.” She then gave me 30 dollars and bought the Bhagavad-gita and told me that any time I could come visit her at her house.

A few weeks later I saw mother Malati (disciple of Srila Prabhupada who is on the GBC) in Arizona. I knew that she had been there in the early days in San Francisco. When I asked her what her Karmi name was, sure enough she told me it was “Melanie.”

So how wonderful it is that 25 years later a woman who was then 6 years old still remembered the name of a Hare Krsna who was “Sooooo nice to me and my sister.” 25 years later she bought the Bhagavad Gita!!

Mother Malati Ki jay!!
