Vyasa Puja in Mayapur

By Tusti Mohan Krsna dasa

We would like to give a brief account of the 56th Sri Vyasapuja celebration of HH Tamal Krsna Goswami in Mayapur yesterday, June 28th, 2002.

As usual, the day before, devotees celebrated Adivas Ceremony in 876 in the Conch Bldg in his quarters, with puspanjali, kirtans, and glorification.

During the Vyasapuja day (28-6-02), the ceremony was celebrated as follows, according to a meeting with all the disciples present, and the services were distributed among all of them. Manasi Ganga dd performed arati during mangala arati at the Samadhi site, kirtan was lead by Shyamaraman Das, then chanting rounds around the samadhi until the time for darsan arati in the main temple. Afterwards devotees went back to the samadhi and did gurupuja to HH Tamal Krishna Goswami, and that arati was done by Ali krsna dd.

Spiritual Connections: TKG Edition
By Gaura Hari das

"Tamal Krishna Maharaja was one of my most prominent spiritual connections to Srila Prabhupada. Under his guidance I served His Divine Grace during his final pastimes. He taught me not only how to serve His Divine Grace, but also his ISKCON and the entire Vaisnava community. From him I learnt how to become Srila Prabhupada’s watchdog. Therefore, after his disappearance, I felt it was my duty to broadcast his glory in whichever way I could. Since Spiritual Connections is the forum to communicate with my disciples and friends, I decided to use this medium as my first attempt in that endeavour." —His Holiness Bhakti Charu Maharaja.

This new special edition of Spiritual Connections magazine is dedicated to His Holiness Tamal Krishna Maharaja and comprises 48 pages of nectar from the early years with Srila Prabhupada, his pioneering preaching activities, and the sweet nectar of remembrances from Mayapur.

TKG Vyasa Puja in Mayapur
by Tusti Mohan Krsna dasa and Tusti devi dasi

Today 28-6-02 is the Sri Vyasapuja celebration of HH Tamal Krsna Goswami, the first after his physical departure in Gaura Mandal. His samadhi is beside Srila Prabhupada’s samadhi in Mayapur, and we are attaching few pictures that were taken recently so all of you can see how it looks like at this moment.

Today, disciples, well-wishers, and devotees in general celebrated the Sri Vyasapuja of HH Tamal Krsna Goswami in his quarters in the Conch Building in Mayapur, and yesterday was the adivas ceremony (later we will post most details). This morning there were homages from Godbrothers, disciples, and well-wishers, and after that there were aratis simultaneously in the quarters as well in the samadhi. After that, there was a big feast for all the devotees in the big kitchen arranged by HH Tamal Krsna Goswami’s disciples. We will be sending pictures soon about this celebration.

Remembrance Festival for
HH Tamal Krishna Goswami
— June 9, 2002

From Ramabhadra Dasa

Dear Maharajas, Prabhus, Matajis,

Please Accept our Humble Obeisances. All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!

We hope you are all as excited as we are for the upcoming New York Ratha-Yatra Festival. The devotees here are working steadfastly to make this festival one of the best ever. There is, however, one important change to the festival schedule.

In place of the June 9 Reunion Fesvtial at Tompkins Square Park, New York ISKCON will be celebrating the life and teachings of Srila Tamal Krishna Goswami, with a remembrance Festival, at Sri Sri Radha Govinda Mandir, Brooklyn, NY.

Tamal Krishna Goswami
From Deena Bandhu dasa

On the passing of His Holiness Tamal Krishna Goswami, the members of ISKCON's Indian Continental Committee (ICC) were deeply grieved and shocked.

His Holiness Tamal Krishna Maharaj was one of the closest disciples of Srila Prabhupada and one the most prominent leaders of ISKCON. In India, he was one of Srila Prabhupada's principal assistants in the early days of establishing the mission here. It was in Jaipur, India, that Srila Prabhupada awarded him Sannyas in 1972 and gave him the title Goswami.

Following Your Instructions,
Srila Gurudev

By Krishna Vijay Das and Nava Kishori Devi Dasi

Our Most Beloved Srila Gurudev,

We are writing this letter posthumously, but I know you will hear our words. It was not so long ago when I spoke to you on the phone and you gave us such good advice. Before going to the Holy Dham of Vrindavan and Sridham Mayapur in November - December 2001, you blessed our Tirath Yatra and gave us specific instructions.

You also gave us hope during my recent illness, and with your blessings, I am better. You gave us so much good advice on so many occasions it is hard to put it all down on paper. But the most important one is your most recent promise to us that you would come and visit us and stay with us at our home.

Dying in Navadvipa
From Ramiya dasa

Dear Goswami Maharaja,

We humbly beg for your blessings. We were engladdened to read the quote below sent to us by your Godbrother Virabahu Prabhu. It has reassured us of what is already clear. We hope it will give others the same encouragement. You have given us much while present among us, and now we pray that your blessings will continue.

Your servant and godbrother,
Ramiya dasa

Pramana Khanda, Chapter Four

There is no consideration of fitness for hearing the glories of Navadvipa. Dying in other tirthas gives either material enjoyment or liberation, but dying in Navadvipa gives pure devotion to the Lord.

In Navadvipa there is no consideration of a faulty death—at an inauspicious time, in pain, in the house, or by accident.

Death at other tirthas while practicing yoga or death in Kasi while absorbed in impersonal meditation become insignificant when compared to death in Navadvipa.

Discovery of a Lost Photo
By Vipramukhya Swami

Bhaktivedanta Manor, UK - April 6, 2002: After hearing of the unfortunate passing of Tamal Krishna Goswami last month, I opened my locker in the sannyasa room at Bhaktivedanta Manor today and found a photograph which I pinned there years ago.

The photograph was taken, I believe, in 1997 during Lord Nrsimhadeva's Appearance Day, when we had a maha-harinam in downtown London at Leicester Square.

As I recall, there were about 200 devotees, and we had to split into two groups. We started at the Soho Street temple in central London. I headed one group, which turned right on Oxford Street heading East, and then South along Charing Cross Road while Tamal Krishna Goswami headed the other group which turned left on Oxford Street and headed West toward Regent Street.

The two parties met a Leicester Square, just north of Trafalgar Square, and had a big kirtan, where the photograph was taken.

Tamal Krishna Goswami and I danced joyfully together, enjoying the ecstatic kirtan, as enthusiastic devotees on either side of us looked on.

When the Well Runs Dry
By Jayasri dasi

Dear Tamal Krsna Goswami (TKG),

All glories to your wonderful service to Srila Prabhupada.

There is an old saying: "You don’t miss the water until the well runs dry." We will miss you more than we previously realized. Just as when Srila Prabhupada left, we who remain behind, trying to withstand the difficult material energy, find a great void in our lives. The loss of a person such as you, a stalwart devotee, a great preacher, a great general in Lord Caitanya’s army, and most of all a kind well-wisher, is very difficult to deal with. It makes us most unhappy.

A Prayer to
Tamal Krishna Maharaja

By Abhay das
(Disciple of His Holiness Lokanatha Maharaja)

Dear Tamal Krishna Maharaja,

It’s taken me several weeks to get over the initial shock of your disappearance. It's unusual that I should be writing you as I am not your disciple or had very much of your association (we only met once. ) But anyone who is a member of ISKCON feels they know you. Seventeen years ago Servant of the Servant played an important part of my bhakta program. And now as a struggling householder, I always have a copy of TKG's Diary within arm's reach at home. I just open it up at random when I need a dose of Prabhupada to get me through the day. I must have read it one hundred times. And after reading I always end up thanking Krishna for sending you to take care of Srila Prabhupada in his last days. I truly believe that no one could have taken better care or showed more love than you. Thank God that you were there. Your Holiness was the greatest enhancer, facilitator, and protector of the sweet rasa that was Srila Prabhupada's final pastimes.

The Passing Away
of Tamal Krishna Goswami

By Andrea Michell

I was once a gurukuli kid, and with the passing of Srila Gurudeva (Tamal Krsna), it reminded me of what that meant to me. My first remembrance of Gurudeva was around 1979. I was7 years old. I vaguely remember a big bus that had Radha Damodar Deities in it with Srila Gurudeva.

I patiently waited at the door for him to call me in because I was finally getting a devotee name. I carried that name for 10 years, and despite the awful things that happened in Gurukula, I can say that Srila Gurudeva is one of the reasons that I harbor no hard feelings. I am not trying to join the lawsuit bandwagon.

To Tamal Krishna Goswami
From Sankarshan Das Adhikari

My Dear Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

It is such a great sadness for me that you have departed. For these last twenty-four years that I have personally known you, you have been a great inspiration for me in my service to Srila Prabhupada. Your dedication to being fully absorbed in spreading Krishna consciousness and the obvious sweet taste you were deriving from that absorption stands eternally as a shining example to all Vaisnavas.

I can never forget how kind you were to me when I went out to open a preaching center. In spite of your busy schedule you did the austerity of riding 300 miles with me in my little Toyota to help me line up a donor to support the center.

I will never forget how ecstatic it was when you and I lived alone for two or three weeks in Houston on your first writing retreat as I assisted you in putting together your first book, Servant of the Servant.

To Their Lordships
From Yashoda Dulal das,

To: Their Lordships Sri-Sri Radha-Govindaji, Srila Prabhupada and all the devotees

Please accept my sincerest dandavats. Jaya Sri-Sri Radha-Govindaji! Jaya Srila Prabhupada! Jaya Srila Gurudeva!

On March 15th, 2002, Your Lordships called my spiritual master, Srila Tamal Krishna Goswami Gurudeva, back to You.

I have always felt a connection with Your Lordships because Srila Gurudeva took sannyasa before You. Once, standing in front of You, I begged You that the next time I meet Srila Gurudeva, I must take initiation from him. I wanted it to be official so that it will be beyond any doubt that I am his.

A Request to All ISKCON Leaders
By N.I. Umakantha Sarma

I am an aspiring devotee writing from Dubai, UAE. I first came to know about HH Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaja in the Back to Godhead magazine, where it was mentioned that Maharaja had a prolonged illness and subsequently Maharaja was cured.

Recently, I was able to watch Maharaja's video titled "God and Demigods, " which was wonderful and dispelled lot of doubts about the position of demigods. The way Maharaja narrated the facts was really exceptional and relishing. Since the first week of March, I have been browsing the web site, where the photographs of Maharaja along with HH Jayapataka Swami were posted. It was nice to see that Maharaja was walking like a general and having good discussions with HH Jayapataka swami. Then I thought, by the grace of Lord Krishna, HH Tamal Krishna Maharaja is back in Mayapur and his services to fallen souls will again continue.

March 24, 2002

Dear Tamal Krishna Maharaja,

Please accept my obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I first met you when you were traveling with Radha-Damodara. How I wished I could have joined that bus party! Yours and Visnujana Swami’s program was the epitome of a daily spiritual festival. In 1976-77 we had the good fortune to serve under your authority in Gita-nagari. With all respect to the many wonderful devotees under whom we have served Srila Prabhupada, I have always said that your guidance was the most wonderful. Not only was every thing expertly managed, but also every devotee felt your personal love and concern. Yes, you corrected—as when I went outside to yell for a devotee who was in the barn, telling him there was a phone call for him. You called me into the office and kindly informed me that screaming outside wasn’t exactly ladylike and would I not do that again.

Samadhi for Tamal Krishna Goswami
By Tusti Mohan Krsna das

Dear Devotees,

Today, March 27, 2002, the disciples of HH Tamal Krishna Goswami and other members of our community have finished building a temporary samadhi of bamboo for HH Tamal Krsna Goswami so devotees will have the opportunity to do some programs (kirtans, bhajans, and remembrances).

Tamal Krishna Goswami
By BB Govinda Swami

Dear Vaisnava Community,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Tamal Krishna Goswami joined us in kirtan every evening prior to his departure.

For many nights the kirtan had been conducted in his quarters. No invitation was required. When the doors opened, the room quickly filled to capacity with devotees, young and old, eager to enter into the nectarean chanting of the Lord's holy names.

This was really the spiritual highlight of each day. It was the event that gave meaning to being in Mayapur. We all sat together, with one of our most elder brothers, a loving family of devotees, singing the names of Sri Radha and Sri Krishna with deep feeling.

On the last few evenings of Tamal Krishna Goswami's presence the kirtan shifted to the Panca Tattva Temple. This was done due to the increasing size of the crowd.

On his last evening in Mayapur, he came from the main pandal program. Having finished speaking he joined the kirtan. After an hour of kirtan he reached over, held my hand, and thanked me for being in kirtan with him. Then he told me, "Tomorrow I will be leaving."

I asked him where he was going and he said, " Back to home ... ," and after a pause he said "Back to the UK."

Trying to Understand
By Yasoda Kumar Das

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! All glories to my dear Gurudev Tamal Krsna Goswami Maharaj!

The loss of my dear Gurudev is unmeasured. We were shocked, we were crying, we were and still are praying. But we have never forgotten our Gurudev's instructions to us. Now all disciples of our dear Gurudev are trying to do something for the realization of our Gurudev's desire.

The following is a quotation from Srimad Bhagavatam 3.16.37.

From ISKCON Malaysia

When I leave," you said, "please place my body
In the land where cows and peacocks roam freely
Govardhana shall be my home eternally."
Salutations Gurudeva unto thee

So bold, so grave, fighting relentlessly
Defeating the vile agents of Kali
Cleaning the earth of impersonal calamity
Salutations Gurudeva unto thee

A Short Remembrance
of Tamal Krishna Goswami

By Kripanidhi das

It was August 1973, and I was a young brahmacari on travelling sankirtana with Ganapati and Dharmatma. We were all young and new to Krishna consciousness. Our  party had arrived in New Vrindavana for the Janmasthami and Srila Prabhupada's Appearance day Celebration. Tamal Krishna Maharaja and Vishnujana Maharaja were giving discourse on Srila Visvanatha Chakravarti's prayers to the Spiritual Master.

From Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Maharaja

Swami Jayapataka Maharaj,

I am severely shocked to get the news of passing away of Swami Tamal Krishna Maharaj due to a road accident at Fulia on 15th morning, published in the Hindustan Times newspaper, Calcutta. I had the opportunity to see him and talk to him in several meetings of the Trustees of the BSCT at your Mayapur Chandrodaya Math. What can we do where there is no remedy? We are forced to tolerate. I only pray to Sree Guru Gauranga Radha-Krishna to bestow eternal peace to the departed soul.

It Made Me Serious
By Abhinanda dasa GKG

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

As a second-generation devotee, I cannot feel that much for the departure of Srila Prabhupada. From the beginning, he is transcendental for me, in the spiritual world. However, when I got the news of His Holiness Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaj going, for me it was as if Srila Prabhupada had left the planet. That is how much Tamal Krishna Goswami is associated with Srila Prabhupada for me, although I have never personally met him.

Time Has Separated Us
By Laksmi Nrsimha Das

Dear Tamal Krsna Goswami Maharaja:

This relative factor known as time has separated us again. You have now joined Prabhupada in his eternal sankirtan lila and I remain behind solidly enamored and controlled by the time factor of this material world. For three years, I had the blessing of your association while traveling on the Radha Damodara party. You personally brought me to the fire sacrifice for my first and second intiation by Srila Prabhupada. For a period of time you allowed me the honor of being your secretary and personally gave me lessons that were taught to you by our beloved gurudev, Srila Prabhupada.

Tamal Krishna Goswami
and Sudama Prabhu

Text and Photos
by Madhusudani Radha devi dasi

Dear Maharaja,

Here are the photos I promised you. Please excuse the delay. I had to search a bit to find the negatives and then make a new set of prints. Hope you like them. I think they're showing a very sweet mood. At least that's how I remember that day in November 1993.

Sudama had told Brahmananda and me that he wanted to see Tamal Krsna Maharaja before he died, so we got him Maharaja's phone number, and Sudama called him up. Tamal Krishna Goswami was stunned to hear the voice of his old friend after 17 years of being out of touch. Afterwards Sudama was so happy. He said that Maharaja had promised to visit him before he died.

Memories of Gurudeva,
Tamal Krishna Goswami

By Dr Prayag Narayan Misra,
ISKCON Phoenix, Arizona, USA

My association with Gurudev began in Houston, Texas, USA, in 1979 while I was visiting from Norway. Gurudev had just returned from a trip to Fiji with a newly married devotee and his godbrother Dharma Bhavanadas. I heard his discourses on Bhagavad-Gita, and it made an immediate impression upon me. With the mercy of Radharani, I continued his satsang again in Houston, and later on the Oklahoma farm and in Dallas, where I had even closer participation at Kalachand Ji's Dham, until 1999.

Bhagavad-Gita: On Leaving the Body

Hare Krsna! Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada! All glories to Tamal Krsna Goswami Maharaj!

Some devotees have doubts: How come a pure devotee like HH Tamal Krsna Goswami Maharaj could leave his body in an accident?

Here are some quotations from Bhagavad-Gita As It Is that can clear their doubts.

March 17, 2002, marked the Smrti Sabha (the remembrance gathering) for His Holiness Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaja in Sri Jagannatha Mandir, ISKCON Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. While expressing our heartfelt appreciation, the temple president said, "We thank all devotees who helped in organizing this Smrti Sabha festival..."

Heartfelt Condolences
by Arjuna dasa

Hare Krsna.

I am terribly saddened by the sudden tragic passing of His Holiness Tamal Krsna Goswami and Vrndavanesvari devi dasi and the injuries suffered by her husband and the driver of the taxi en route to the Calcutta airport. I offer my sincerest, deepest, and most heartfelt condolences to all the devotees of Lord Krsna who will suffer pangs of separation and grief at the disappearance of these two great and humble devotees. I joined ISKCON in 1991 in Berkeley, California, and had the very good fortune and opportunity to meet His Holiness on more than one occasion, and always looked forward with great enthusiasm to his visits to the Bay Area. I am deeply shocked by this horrible mishap.

Remembering Tamal Krsna Goswami
By Swami B.V. Tripurari

I first met Tamal Krsna Goswami in Gauda Mandala Bhumi, the circle of Gaudadesa in which the lila of Sri Gaurasundara is eternally performed. The last time I saw him he was was also in Gaudadesa, and today I have learned that he passed from this world in that same Gauda Mandala Bhumi.

I knew him for 28 years, and I served Srila Prabhupada and Mahaprabhu shoulder to shoulder with him from the spring of 1975 to the summer of 1977 and then again from the summer of 1978 until sometime in 1980. He is not a person one can easily forget.

I consider him an eternal servant of Srila Prabhupada. His service to His Divine Grace is woven into every stitch of the fabric of ISKCON. I know of no area of service that he was not only involved in but moreover took responsibility for in some capacity at one time or another.

Eyewitness Accounts
From BB Govinda Maharaja
and Uttama Sloka dasa

From BB Govinda Maharaja:

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Tamal Krishna Goswami left for Calcutta at 4:15 along with Vrindavanesvari and Kalasambara and a servant, Aghavit.

I sang mangala arati that morning, and during the Tulasi puja, Gopal Raja came running in and said that they had just had a phone call that there was severe accident and Tamal Krishna Goswami was unconscious.

I made an announcement to the assembled devotees, and we all prayed together for a minute. Then I ran out and joined Jayapataka Swami, Sivarama Swami, Jayadvaita Swami and Niranjana Swami in a car, and we left for the site, on the other side of Santipur in a place called Phulia. That is where Haridas Thakur was beaten and was tempted by Mayadevi.

Basically, the driver of Tamal Krishna Goswami's Tata Sumo went to sleep and sideswiped a big tree on the left side of the road at high speed. Tamal Krishna Goswami was sitting in the front left side, and Vrindavanesvari was sitting behind him. They took the direct impact.

Dear Maharajas and Prabhus,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. All glories to His Holiness Srila Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaja.

Here in Dallas we were all shocked when we heard the news. It is very hard to accept that we will not be able to see Tamal Krishna Maharaja walking around the neighborhood here in Dallas and visiting with the devotees on the block. Dallas is very much his home and he has been the driving force behind the establishment of this wonderful community of devotees.

March 16, 2002

Dear Tamal Krsna Goswami,

Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Today I am writing you a posthumous letter, just as our spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, did in the assembly of his disciples in Seattle when his godbrother Bhakti Prajana Kesvava Maharaja passed away in 1968.

At that time Srila Prabhupada wrote:

"Be it resolved that we the undersigned members and devotees of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in a condolence meeting, express our profound bereavement on hearing of the passing of Kesava Gosvami Maharaja, our sannyasa guru."

Goswami Maharaja, this evening a number of your godbrothers, disciples, friends, and wellwishers are also expressing our profound bereavement that, by the mysterious plan of the Lord, you have suddenly been taken from our vision. We are still in a state of shock as to how we have become bereft of one of ISKCON's great sankirtan generals.

Will Be Missed

By Bhakta Omer

Haribol! Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I saw HH Tamal Krishna Goswami for the first time in ‘97, when he visited Israel. At the time, I was being introduced to Krishna Consciousness. I heard HH in a series of lectures. One day, in one of his lectures, HH talked about being committed to Krishna Consciousness and how we should follow the regulative principles and chant daily. That evening I chanted 16 rounds for the first time. By the grace of HH Tamal Krishna Goswami I chanted 16 rounds for about six months, a custom I only recently went back to.

Thanks for all your reports in this hard time... It is very very hard/sad to read it all... My daughter wanted to take initiation from TKG and my wife did— I have second from him and he was very merciful to me...I did some service for him along time ago—1979-1980 around then, and since then he has always allowed me complete access to him. He could be in any big meeting, and I could walk in this room not matter where he was...he would invite me to take prasadam with him.

Dear Devotees,

Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I would like to share with you the pics of the samadhi of HH Tamal Krishna Goswami here in Mayapur the day after his body was placed there.

Every devotee who passes by offer his respects to such a great servant of Srila Prabhupada. His Holiness TKG is the first guru buried in Mayapur and his samadhi is close to the samadhi of Srila Prabhupada. The location of the samadhi of HH Tamal Krishna Goswami has been designated as the location for the samadhis of other disciples of Srila Prabhupada, and it is located at the entrance to the housing area.

Was the 16th a Fast Day?
By Vipramukhya Swami

Dear Chakra,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I am very unfortunate that I could not be in Mayapur when His Holiness Tamal Krishna Goswami passed away. Right now I am at the Long Island temple near New York City. Here, we devotees are completely dependent upon Chakra for news.

It is sad, therefore, that we did not see the news that the GBC body requested devotees to fast for half day on March 16 until late afternoon of March 16.

I am sad for this. I spent the whole day thinking about Tamal Krishna Maharaja, and we discussed him during the morning class, but I only wish the news about the fast day had reached us in time.

Your servant,
Vipramukhya Swami

[We missed it here too, so we observed it the next day. The message was sent out from India on the morning of the 16th itself. Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to keep Chakra up to the minute.]

Pilgrim's Diary - 15 March 2002
The Passing of Tamal Krishna Goswami

By Vipramukhya Swami

I had packed away my Salagram and Govardhan Silas and was preparing to leave Bhaktivedanta Manor for a morning flight to America when I heard the news.

Tamal Krishna Goswami has passed away. He died in a horrible automobile accident in a taxi, just after leaving Mayapur, India, on the way to the Calcutta airport.

As soon as I heard, I became stunned. I stopped packing my bags and went downstairs where there was a meeting of senior devotees taking place, discussing the situation.

What can I say about Tamal Krishna Goswami? He was a great devotee, often misunderstood by ISKCON's antagonists. He was among the first devotees selected by Srila Prabhupada to serve on the GBC body. He was Srila Prabhupada's personal secretary, even up to the point of Srila Prabhupada's passing from his body.

Dear Father,

Please accept my humble obeisance. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. All glories to his dedicated devotees.

It's now 2:00 am, 16th of March as I write this article. The reason I am still awake is very simple: I am waiting for confirmation that the rumor of your passing is but just a small joke arranged by the Lord to test our love for you and increase our attraction to you.

But 14 hours have already passed since the rumor reached my ears. Why is it that no one has yet called to tell us that you are actually still here? Don't these devotees know that all over the world, there are thousands of people like me waiting anxiously for the good news?

Tamal Krishna Goswami: Back to Krishna
By Amogha das

This morning His Holiness Tamal Krsna Goswami left to go to Krishna. He was in a road accident after leaving at 3:00 am from ISKCON Sri Mayapur.

His Holiness Sridhar Maharaj announced the news to the devotees in the temple here at about 7 am. He said, "We pray that Tamal Krishna Maharaj will continue to shower us with his blessings from his position in the spiritual world. All we can do now is pray to Sri Sri Radha Madhava."

I personally felt Goswami Maharaj's presence after hearing there was an accident but not knowing if he was gone. He assured me, "I am with Srila Prabhupada and Krishna, and everything is all right."

The Events of March 15
By Tusti Mohan Krsna das

Mayapur, March 15th, 2002

I am sorry that I have to give a sad report about HH Tamal Krishna Goswami's physical disappearance. Since I am sending always reports to conferences and websites, most of the news is good and devotees feel encouraged in Krsna Consciousness, but when I came to know today early in the morning about the car accident where His Holiness Tamal Krishna Goswami and her grace Vrndavanesvari dd passed away, I couldn't believe it. Just yesterday, I saw His Holiness in an excellent mood and enthusiastic about going back to quickly finish his PHD.

I asked HH for a meeting to record an interview yesterday, and He kindly promised me about 30 minutes, but somehow it couldn't happen because whenever I would go to his room in the Conch Building, the room was packed full with devotees (Godbrothers and Godsisters and disciples) so I felt that I should not disturb him. But somehow I felt that I will not have a chance again if I do not do it (I had some reasons to feel that, which I can say later on).

Dear Devotees,

I have just come back from the Krishna-Balarama Mandir, and after the Mangal-Artik the temple president, Mahaman Prabhu, announced that today instead of Srimad-Bhagavatam class, some devotees will talk about HH Tamal Krishna Goswami. Among the devotees that are going to speak are Gargamuni Prabhu, Dhananjaya Prabhu, Hari Vilasa Prabhu, and Purnachandra Prabhu. Afterwards, we will have Puspanjali and at 2 PM a feast for all the devotees.

Memories of Tamal Krishna Goswami
By Siddhanta dasa

In memory of HH Tamal Krishna Goswami, we submit a few of his stories about his relationship with Srila Prabhupada.

Tamal Krishna Goswami: The devotees invited me to a darshan where I heard Prabhupada beautifully sing the Chintamani prayers. Afterwards he asked if anyone had any questions and I raised my hand. At that time America was at war with Vietnam, and at our age, the draft board was a problem. I was very concerned about whether or not I would be drafted, and so I asked Prabhupada to describe what the spiritual world was like. He looked at me and said, "In the spiritual world there are no draft boards."

Prabhupada Passes Away

By Mulakaranam dasa

Hare Krishna! Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! All glories to Sri Guru and Gauranga!

A strong disciple of Srila Prabhupada, HH Tamal Krishna Goswami Maharaja, has left this world. ISKCON Kuala Lumpur had evening prayers and offerings on 15-03-02 to mark the demise of a wonderful spiritual master.

About 80 to 100 devotees from the Kuala Lumpur, Klang, and Negri Sembilan regions attended this prayer. There were bhajans, a short discourse about His Holiness by the temple president, HG Uttama Caitanya dasa, prayers to Lord Nrsimha and then puspanjali.

Dear Goswami Maharaja,

Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances! All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!

In our last correspondence, I expressed to you the desire to be free from all responsibilities and sit with you with purified hearts under the trees surrounding Sri Govardhan and hear Srimad Bhagavatam together.

Please still grant me this wish.

Separation from Devotees
By Jyotirmaya das

Dear Maharajas, Devotees, and Friends,

Please accept my humble obeisances from my fallen self. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. All glories to His Holiness Tamal Krishna Maharaja.

I am sitting here in the office of the Chicago temple, where I do secretarial work. And all of a sudden, after reading about His Holiness Tamal Krishna Maharaja's passing and seeing the photos on the internet, I am feeling a little of how Narottama das Thakur must have felt with all of his beloved devotees leaving for the spiritual world.

Where are they? I am feeling separation from Tamal Krishna Maharaja, George Harrison, Visnujana Maharaja, and other celebrated devotees. It makes my want to cry out, "Krishna, I feel as though you are taking all of the devotees back to you. I need the association of these devotees. Please!"

Your servant,

Memories of Tamal Krishna Maharaja
By Brahma Das

I worked extensively under Tamal Krishna Maharaja from 1975 through 1979. We met when I was in San Francisco working with Swami Tripurari on his BBT book distribution party. At that time Tamal Krishna Goswami asked me to join his party as leader of one of the new Radha-Damodar Buses.

Upon returning from India Tamal Krishna Goswami had teamed up with his old friend Visnujana Maharaja and turned his festival bus program into a dynamic preaching party. Together their preaching was so powerful that they recruited enough devotees to fill up two new buses. Soon those devotees were selling more Back to Godheads than any other zone in North America. Therefore Back to Godhead featured ads for the Radha-Damodar Traveling Sankirtan Party in every issue. This ad had a picture of Visnujana Maharaja chanting and playing harmonium, and it read: "Travel with advanced devotees of the Hare Krishna movement" and "Learn to play ancient Indian Instruments."

Tamal Krishna Goswami
Goes Back to Godhead

By BVV Narasimha Swami

Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. All glories to HDG Tamal Krishna Goswami.

This morning, 15th March 2002, Tamal Krishna Goswami left his body and returned to the spiritual world after being involved in a car accident.

He left with a group of devotees from Mayapur Dham at 4:00 am on his way to Calcutta Airport, from where he was to catch a flight to return to England. He was the front-seat passenger in a Tata Sumo vehicle in the vicinity of Shantipur. The vehicle hit the rear end of a truck and as a result of the injuries sustained in the accident, Maharaja went back to Godhead. All the devotees in Mayapur are now engaged in offering prayers and kirtana.

Tamal Krishna Goswami
Passes Away

From Tusti Mohan Krsna das

Dear Devotees,

Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I am very sad to report this terrible news to all of you. I just got a call from a few devotees that HH Tamal Krishna Goswami left his body due to a car accident on his way to the Calcutta Airport. He was unconscious, in a coma, and finally passed away in the hospital. We are trying to obtain details but communications are very bad.

The day before yesterday HH Tamal Krishna Maharaja was talking about his experiences with Srila Prabhupada and other devotees on the main stage in the festival inauguration program. Afterwards, he excused himself due to health problems, so we have to assume his body was a little weak and could not tolerate the shock of the accident. He was also sharing stories with other senior devotees who were present in 1972 like HH Jayapataka Maharaja, Lokanath Maharaja, and Brahmananda prabhu. It so unfortunate for us to lose the physical presence of such a dear devotee and personal associate and secretary of HDG Srila Prabhupada.

This is to update you. HH Tamal Krsna Goswami's body will be arriving in Mayapur in the next few hours, maybe at 2:30 or 3:00 pm, from Ranaghat. As per his will HH will be buried in Mayapur (we got his last will from Dallas temple) and all the senior God brothers and disciples are taking care, as a sannyasi’s body should not be cremated, and he will have a samadhi in Mayapur and a puspa samadhi in an ashram in Govardhan- Vrndaban.

Devotees met in HH Bhakticaru Swami's quarters and glorified him. HG Keshava Bharati Prabhu read his will and crying was glorifying his dear God brother as well all the other devotees and other are having constantly kirtan in the temple room. HH Radhanath Swami and HH Giridhari Swami and HH Sridhara Swami, HH Guruprasada Swami, HH Prahladananda Swami, HH Vedavyasapriya Swami were all present at this moment and waiting for the arrival of the body of HH TKG to do all the rituals and ceremony and according to the tradition he has to be put in Samadhi before sunset of today itself. The program will be done with a Gurupuja in the temple and glorification from God brothers in a room in conch building and than there will be his moving to a samadhi. We also came to know that HH passed away in the place were Srila Haridas Thakura chanted 300,000 names of Krsna and where he initiated Maya, so it is in a very auspicious place as well it is part of Gaura mandala.
