Srila Gour Govinda Swami,
the Pride of ISKCON

By Nruhari dasa

Srila Gour Govinda Swami, the Pride of ISKCON

A Brief Life Sketch of Srila Gour Govinda Swami

Srila Gour Govinda Swami Maharaja made his appearance as Braja Bandhu Manik in a Vaisnava family on 2nd September 1929. He appeared in the village of Jagannathapur, not far from Jagannath Puri Dham, in Orissa, India, but as his mother was descended from the Giri family of the village Gadeigiri, Braja Bandhu spent his childhood there. His grandfather was a paramahamsa whose only business was to chant Hare Krishna and cry before the local Deity of Krishna known as Gopal Jiu. He taught Braja Bandhu how to chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra by counting on his fingers. In the company of his uncles, Braja Bandhu would travel from village to village chanting Hare Krishna and singing the songs of Narottam Das Thakur.

From the age of six, Braja Bandhu worshiped the Deity of Gopal by making garlands, and sometimes, under the light of a candle, by singing hymns for Him from palm-leaf manuscripts. He would never take any food that was not offered to Gopal.

News from Puerto Rico
By Nandini devi dasi

News from Puerto Rico

Hare Krishna! All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!

My name is Nandini devi dasi, and I want you to know that much is happening here in New Govardhan Hill, in the beautiful mountains here in Puerto Rico.

About three years ago, Vakreshavara Pandit prabhu returned to his eternal service to his spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, serving once again in the Puerto Rico yatra. Upon his return, the temple property was in shambles. Overgrown, the land had been unkept for years. The temple itself had also been neglected, and the devotees here, though very sincere, could barely maintain the deities.

Lovisha: What Sort of
Devotees Are We?

By Niscala devi dasi

Reading CHAKRA recently, I wondered if it was a website for devotees, which of course implies humanity, or something else. A devotee writes in with news of the shocking death of his niece, but rather than reach out with condolences, sympathy, and support, several readers instead lodged complaints about him, for giving them a description which was "gruesome" "disturbing" and "sensational" All this indicates total narcissism, or absorption in oneself, in how this person is making me feel, rather than concern for the personal challenge and torment that another soul must be experiencing.

Lovisha: Harinam is the Answer
By Satyahit das

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada and Lord Chaitanya's Sankirtan Movement.

Reading about Lovisha certainly did trigger some horror, etc., and as we know, this horror upon animals goes on as a normal daily affair meant for sale in the supermarkets. So therefore, we can understand that this brutality will be reflected in human society due to the laws of karma.

Mother Hladini
Memories: Correction

From Malati-manjari dasi

Dear Prabhus,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I want to thank whoever has put my request for memories about Hladini Mataji on your web site. However, I used an expression that is not really befitting to the situation, and I beg you to change that if possible. Instead of saying she was executed in Liberia it would be better to say she was murdered, as one devotee pointed out that to "execute" means to put to death especially by carrying out a lawful sentence. And that, of course, doesn't hold true for this great saint who was shot by a rebel leader.

Moldova Needs Help
By Tapasya dasa

Dear Devotees,

I am writing this letter to ask the help of our worldwide community. I recently visited the Republic of Moldova, and the impression of that visit has affected me deeply. The country is suffering from extreme financial duress. The community of devotees are struggling to keep their small preaching effort alive. They have suffered much loss recently, including the loss of their temple building. With the approval of Niranjana Maharaja (current GBC) I have built a webpage to help generate emergency funds for this yatra: www.harekrishnamoldova.com

Clarifications on My
Article About Lovisha

By Sri Nandanandana dasa

First of all I’m glad for the devotees that wrote in to Chakra, and sent emails to me, or those I talked with on the phone who appreciated my article, called "Why I’m Determined to Spread Spiritual Knowledge." And I’m also sorry that some felt it was too graphic. But the first thing I want to do is ask Rahul what he was talking about when he says in his first letter: "The statement that because of this incident I want to preach more and that this incident is worse than the US attacks is completely Absurd." And then in your second letter you continue with: "To consider that the Americans had suffered less than the girl mentioned would not be correct."

You bet it wouldn’t be correct, which is why I want to know where you are getting this. Where in my article did I say that?

TV and Children
By Bhaktin Alex MacKenzie

Dear Devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I am writing a paper for distribution to my local devotee community on the effects of television viewing on children, especially those under five years. I have collected a large amount of scientific research about the effects of television on children's intellectual and social development, but I would also like to include some perspectives on how it impacts spiritual development.

You could help by letting me know, confidentially, what you think about this issue:

Somaka Maharaja Leaves Body

Somaka Maharaja

Dear devotees,

With a saddened heart, we announce the passing away of Somaka Maharaja. He was affected by an incurable disease, and in the evening of the 18th of this month, his body ceased to function.

He was Italian born and was initiated by Srila Prabhupada in 1972. He faithfully served in ISKCON almost his entire life. He was a sannyasi and an initiating guru. He relinquished his position a few years ago and retired.

He was loved and respected by everyone. The Italian devotees especially mourn the great soul who gave them so much.

Writings about him are published on the Italian web site www.isvara.it

Hare Krishna!

Purnima Festival

from Bhakti Purusottama Swami

2003 Mayapur Gaura Purnima Festival

Dear Devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

With great pleasure we invite you to the 2003 Mayapur Gaura Purnima Festival.

Srila Prabhupada said Mayapur was his place of worship, and thus it is a house of worship for his followers. Therefore, during this year's festival, there will be longer and more kirtans by which we will worship the Supreme Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. In fact, the kirtana hall in the temple is being expanded so more devotees can participate in the temple programs.

We will be providing free prasadam and free accomodations in the guest house dormitories (prior booking required) to all devotees so they will feel very welcome in their house of worship.

From Malati-manjari dasi

Dear Devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I am assisting Yamuna Prabhu (SDG) in writing a biography about Mother Hladini, the Prabhupada disciple who had served Lord Jagannath for many years in New Vrindavan and who was murdered in Liberia in 1990. We have already compiled many interviews, but surely there are many more devotees out there who had her association and are willing to share their valuable memories.

Please contact me directly. Thank you very much.

These pictures are organized first according to year and then by festival day. We pray that everyone will find some inspiration from them. We welcome suggestions to improve this service.

Life at the Dead Sea
By Kavicandra Swami

Whenever I come to Israel, a group of us goes to the Dead Sea. It is an opportunity for revival of the material body as well as a retreat for more hearing and chanting.

As we were about to leave on the first day, I took one last walk on the beach. Passing the lifeguard stand, I saw a girl who normally was not there. She saw that I was chanting japa and called out, "Are you Hare Krsna?"

"Yes," I said. Are you a Hare Krsna?" which is my usual reply.

"Sort of," she said.

Like most young Israelis, she had gone to India. She said she had been determined not to get into any spiritual things, but it just caught her. She stayed at Pushkar, which has become practically an Israeli community.

Lovisha: The Language
Could Be More Refined

By Rahul Siotia

Hare Krishna,

To consider that the Americans had suffered less than the girl mentioned would not be correct. Who knows many of the people in the towers might have suffered greatly in trying to rescue their lives. I think we should not undermine certain incidents. I had just mentioned that the language could be more refined. In fact I have received much mail saying that the content might disturb the African devotees and other people in general very much.

Lovisha: Needlessly Graphic
By S. HariKrishna

Dear Chakra,

I am in full agreement with the position of Sri Rahul Siotia regarding the needlessly graphic descriptions in Sri Nandanandana dasa's news article dated 10th October 2002.

I understand the writer's rationale for attempting to bring us face to face with the stark ugliness of this material world. I have no ill feelings towards Sri Nandanandana dasa or his work, for which I have the highest respect.

Nevertheless, I think it is important that a certain culture be observed on forums such as these, which are dedicated to Vaishnavas and Vedic culture.

Why the Name "Chakra"?
By Bhakta Jack

Dear nice Devotees,

First, let me say I appreciate the news, views of all the devotees that come into my house (via computer). There are so many different types of devotees and all with something to give.

But — oh yes, there's a but — why oh why didst thou in all your web wisdom call the site Chakra? Didst thou not know that Sri Visnu has two objects for His devotees— flower and conch— and two objects for chastisement, one a club and the other a chakra?

Samples of Srila Prabhupada’s  Hair Needed
by Yudhisthir das

Dear Prabhus, Maharajas, and others:
Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

For several years now the definitive proof that Srila Prabhupada was not poisoned has been within easy reach but has not yet been taken advantage of. A simple but highly reliable scientific testing method that has been in use for decades can ascertain whether a hair sample contains any toxic elements or not. This method is widely used by law enforcement and is legally valid evidence.

Books have been written on the subject of Srila Prabhupada's ostensible poisoning, debating details, coincidences, and speculations, but a few tests of His Divine Grace's 1977 hair will settle the matter once and for all. Bas! No more debate or doubts.

The Brahmachari and the Chaste Wife
Adapted from the Nrsimha Purana

The following story from the Nrsimha Purana appeared in issue number 11 of Sri Krishna Kathamrita Bindu, the free fortnightly email magazine from ISKCON Gopal Jiu Publications. It illustrates the negative effects of pride as well as the power of a chaste lady.

Special Power

There was once a righteous brahmana named Kasyapa. He had mastered all of the scriptures and was expert in explaining them. Disinclined to performing another's duty, he was daily absorbed in the worship of Lord Narasimha and was always engaged in performing yajna. Every morning and evening he would offer oblations into the sacred fire and he would always show proper hospitality to the brahmanas and guests at his residence.

His wife was named Savitri. She was a high-minded lady, was honored for her virtue, and led a spotless life in service to her husband. Due to her chastity and devotion she was endowed with the power of knowing things beyond the range of the senses.

Diary of a Traveling Preacher
Volume 4, Chapter 24

By Indradyumna Swami

September 22 – October 16, 2002

While in Kazakhstan, I corresponded with several devotees about visiting Nepal before going to Vrindavan, India, for my annual retreat. We made plans to trek to the Kali Gandaki River in the Himalayas during October to search for sacred salagram silas. The great Vaisnava saint, Gopala Bhatta Goswami, walked to the Kali Gandaki 500 years ago, after receiving an order from Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu to look for salagram silas. I had made the three-week journey from Kathmandu myself, and found it invigorating and the exotic nature of Nepal fascinating.

We had already purchased our tickets to Kathmandu when I read an announcement from the American government warning its citizens of the risk of traveling in Nepal. The notice said that while Maoist insurgents are losing support for their guerrilla war against the Nepalese authorities, the situation remains dangerous for Americans.

Personal Transformation &

Personal Transformation & Life Skills Workshop

This past spring, during the Memorial Day Weekend, a wonderful course took place here in New York City's Brooklyn Temple. It was appropriately titled "Personal Transformation/Life Skills Workshop" and was given by Dhira Govinda prabhu with the assistance of Malini dasi and Kaunteya prabhu. Kaunteya prabhu came all the way from India to help with the course.

Twenty people signed up and attended the workshop. It had a mixture of devotees and non-devotees from all walks of life. Professionals, non-professionals, a full time devotee, housewives, friends of devotees, young and old, etc.

Thanks
From Subhadra-mayi devi dasi

I'd like to thank all the devotees who so kindly send me help in regards to my letter. I am so grateful. Especially since I am a stranger to all these wonderful devotees and still they helped me out. There is no way I can sufficiently express my gratitude but I can only pray to achieve this quality also: to help those in need, whoever they are.

I hope that one day I will be able to do something like that for others too. This help has meant so much to me. Thank you again.

San Francisco Ratha Yatra 2002
—The Best in Years

By Bhakta Jerry

Tears of joy and chills of amazement overcame me as I stood in the midst of the Festival of India in Golden Gate Park. How could a festival of such ecstatic grandeur be the result of one individual? This festival is proof that His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada is indeed Jagad Guru, as he single-handedly created a spiritual family of epic proportions. No matter what Vaisnava group one is following these days, we were all celebrating together at San Francisco Ratha Yatra only because of Srila Prabhupada's unlimited mercy on the world.

Lovisha: Disturbed by the Response
By Vyenkata Bhatta Dasa

Hare Krishna,

Thank you very much for publishing Sri Nandanandana Prabhu’s moving and heartfelt article regarding the heinous murder of Lovisha and Sri Nandanandana Prabhu’s subsequent realizations about the necessity of disseminating spiritual knowledge. I found the article to be well written, appropriate, and — albeit in a stark and sobering way — inspiring.

I forwarded the story along to a non-devotee friend who was also incredibly moved and impressed with the level of compassion and intelligence present in the article. She is only beginning to learn about ISKCON, and she shared her appreciation at how genuine, caring, and "real" the devotee-writer seemed to be.

So I was understandably dismayed to read a virulently negative response from CHAKRA reader Rahul Siotia.

Lovisha: Why Publish This?
By Rahul Siotia

The message posted by Stephen Knapp on Chakra regarding the rape and murder of a girl is highly objectionable. In a spiritual forum like Chakra, such brutal stories should not be published. The moderator should edit the story or ask the sender to do so. Sensational stories such as these can disturb the devotee community.

Lovisha: Let’s Try Our Best
Name Withheld

Dear Devotees,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Although it was hard for me to read of Lovisha’s fate, I found Sri Nandanandana dasa’s article, “Determined to Spread Knowledge” very inspiring. Srila Prabhupada was so compassionate and merciful to have given us the gift of Krsna consciousness but we must accept this gift by taking responsibility for it. We must do everything possible to center our lives around Krsna and to share Krsna consciousness with others. We must all take it as our personal mission and pray to Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai to help us make this world a more-loving place or at least a less-hating place.

Festival of Lights in Utah
From Caru dasa

The Krishna Temple at 8628 S State St in Spanish Fork invites everyone to come celebrate Deewali on Sat. Nov 2 from 6 pm: classical and folk dancing, live music, drama, ceremony of lights, huge vegetarian feast, and offering of respects to a live cow.

The Indian New Year is traditionally heralded with the Festival of Lights (Deepa means "lights"). Households put lamps in every window, and temples brightly illuminate altars to bring in the best for the upcoming year. Also, the date of the festival coincides with the return of the avatar of God, Sri Rama, to His ancestral kingdom after an exile of 14 years and many adventures. All the citizens welcomed Rama’s return home by brightening up the entire city of Ayodhya and setting off fireworks.

The Nitai Pada Kamala Boat
By Pritivardhana Das,
Bhaktivedanta Academy, Mayapura

Nitai Pada Kamala:
Nitai Pada Kamala:
Lord Nityananda's
Lotus Feet

"The boat party must continue preaching" — Srila Prabhupada, letter 7 December 1976

An Appeal for Financial Support to Revive the Nitai Pada Kamala Boat Preaching in Mayapura

Brief History

In the 1970s the Nitai Pada Kamala made many trips out of Mayapura to villages along the Ganges bank. Some voyages went as far as the islands in the Bay of Bengal. On several occasions Srila Prabhupada personally traveled on the boat.

Over 15 years ago, the craft was stolen and the program abruptly came to a close. After a long court battle, the boat was finally recovered in a pitiable condition and has since been lying near the Ganges in disrepair.

Israel: A Coming Together
By Kavicandra Swami

Israel: A Coming Together

After reading the awesome accounts of Indradyumna Swami’s preaching, I am quite embarrassed to tell about my little tours. But drops of water fill the jar, and I do believe that Krsna appreciates our efforts, no matter how puny they may be. It is always blissful to be able to meet non-devotees and tell them something about Krsna and give them books. I am quite late with this account but here are some memories of my last visit with the Druze. This was all arranged by Vibhisana prabhu, a long time Israeli devotee who now concentrates his preaching with the Druze.

A Reason Why I Am
Determined to Spread
Spiritual Knowledge

By Stephen Knapp (Sri Nandanandana dasa)

When you see the people of the world who are troubled or confused by the violence, the political upheavals, the poverty, or the lack of unity on this planet, it's natural to want to do something about it. And for me, that something is to try and spread deep spiritual knowledge, especially the universal truths which are provided by the Vedic culture. But this need for doing something has never come home to sit with me as much as it has recently with an incident that took place in South Africa. It has disturbed as well as motivated me even more than the violence that brought down the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, a year ago.

Human Spontaneous Combustion
From Brian

I am studying human spontaneous combustion (HSC). Can anyone help me on where in Srila Prabhupada's books there is any reference to this phenomenon? Or perhaps His lectures etc? Is it attributable to the soul within or a karmic reaction or both?

Many thanks.

Hare Krishna.

Association Needed
From Harish Matabonu

I am a neophyte congregation devotee from Sri Sri Radha Gopinath Temple, and I am working in India as an AOL technician. However, I am trying to preach to Americans who come for help with AOL software.

I have been successful in making an older woman into a devotee. She is 54 years old and lives in a small village in Montana. She is chanting and wants to meet a devotee, and we both have tried a lot to have her meet someone, but in vain.

Recently in Kansas City, the Rupanuga Vedic College (RVC) has shifted its purchase of white sugar to beet sugar. It was quite simple. We contacted our local supplier and indicated we wanted exclusively beet sugar. The two major types of refined sugar produced in the United States are cane sugar and beet sugar. Most cane sugar uses a filtering agent made from cow bones whereas beet sugar does not.

Looking for Service
By Gopal das

All glories to Srila Prabhupad. Please accept my humble obeisances. Hare Krsna.

I am 51 years of age. I met His Divine Grace on March 21, 22, and 23, 1973, in Hyderabad, India, when Tamal Krsna Maharaj was in charge of the temple. Because of various family reasons, I could not join.

Right now I am serving in the temple as a housekeeping contractor in Bangalore. I have a manpower staff of nearly 150, working and taking care of the cleaning of the temple and other deparments. My children are studying.

As there is problem of this ritvik etc, I am prepared to work in any temple doing service for books, selling, enrolling members, etc, taking care of guest houses if any in the temples, all free. I do not want any payment but a place to stay and render service.

Official Message from the GBC Executive Committee Regarding Vipramukhya Dasa

Dear devotees,

Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the departure of Vipramukhya prabhu from his services as guru and sannyasa.

He has been a dedicated servant of Srila Prabhupada's movement over the last 29 years: a kind and considerate person, an attractive preacher, and always jovial and fun to be with.

In recent years he took on the great burden of being the temple president of Bhaktivedanta Manor, one of Srila Prabhupada's flagship temples.

Crooked Disciples
Told by Sri Srimad Gour Govinda Swami

Gour Govinda Swami
Gour Govinda Swami

The following article appeared in issue number 10 of Sri Krishna Kathamrita Bindu, the free fortnightly email magazine from ISKCON Gopal Jiu Publications.

Once a guru went to the house of one of his disciples. The disciple prepared nice food, and after the guru had eaten, the disciple wanted to show his guru-bhakti. In Ayurveda the haritaki fruit is recommended for good digestion, so the disciple came with haritaki for his guru. The guru said, "All right. Remove the unnecessary things and give me the necessary part."

That disciple was a speculator, a crooked person. He thought, "Oh, the outer portion of the haritaki is unnecessary and the inner portion is necessary." So he threw away the outer skin and gave the inner portion, the hard seed, to the guru. But with haritaki the outer skin is necessary and the inner portion is thrown away. That disciple did the opposite because he was a speculator— bharavahi, saragrahi nahin— he always accepted the unnecessary things that are not the essence.

The 16th Annual ISKCON Vraja Mandala Parikrama will start on Oct. 21st, from Vrindavan. Devotees will be walking through the twelve forests of Vraja Dham, where Lord Krsna's pastimes are going on eternally. Here on Parikrama, you can read, hear, and meditate on these pastimes while being physically present within the forests where His Lilas are going on.

More than 400 devotees, with leading senior Vaisnavas and Sannyasis, are expected to join this year. Seminars and classes will be arranged through the duration of the Parikrama. Please come and experience the spiritually sublime atmosphere and relish Krsna Katha in the forests of Vraja, maintained by Vrnda Devi Herself.
